Which large appliance do you need?
Refrigeration and wine coolers
Refrigeration is the largest section, with fridge-freezers starting from €169, under-counter fridges, chest freezers and side-by-side units. Wine coolers are a separate section, with prices starting from €299, for bottles that need a steady temperature, not a cupboard near 30°C in August.
Washing and drying
Washing machines start from €249. Dryers earn their place in winter, when a load takes days to dry indoors. Washer-dryers do both jobs in one 60 cm slot, the right answer when there is space for one machine only. Drying capacity is usually about half the washing capacity, so a household drying a full load daily is better served by two machines.
Cooking: cookers, ovens and hobs
Cookers (from €299) put oven and hob in one freestanding unit, so one gap takes care of both. A separate oven and hob costs more and needs two fitted slots. In exchange, the hob can go in an island and the oven at eye level. Gas, induction or ceramic is decided at the hob, not at the oven.
Extraction and dishwashing
Cooker hoods (from €109,95) do real work in an open-plan flat, where frying smells otherwise settle into the sofa. Dishwashers (from €323) come in two widths: 60 cm and 45 cm slimline.
Freestanding or built-in?
Freestanding is the default in a rented flat. Built-in earns its price when the kitchen is being fitted or replaced.
| Option | What it is | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freestanding | Sits in a gap, moves with you | Rentals, one-for-one replacements | Visible sides, mostly standard widths |
| Built-in | Fitted behind a cabinet door or into a worktop | New or refitted kitchens | Installation cost, tied to the units |
| Integrated column | Tall fridge or freezer built into a unit | Galley kitchens, open-plan living | Less internal volume per cm of width |
What to check before buying a large appliance in Malta
Measure the gap before the specification
Measure width, depth and height of the recess first. The standard width is 60 cm for cookers, washing machines and dishwashers, but older Maltese kitchens often leave slightly under that. Leave clearance behind a fridge and check the door swing.
Hard water decides how long a machine lasts
Mains water in Malta is hard, so limescale builds up in washing machines and dishwashers faster than a generic manual assumes. On a dishwasher, set the water hardness level at installation and keep the salt topped up. On a washing machine, run a hot maintenance wash once a month.
Read the energy label as a running cost
The energy class is money per year, not a badge. Refrigeration runs 24 hours a day, so the class matters more on a fridge than on a dishwasher used three times a week. Compare the kWh per year figure rather than the letter alone. The label also carries noise in decibels, which matters when the kitchen opens onto the living room.
Frequently asked questions about large appliances in Malta
Does AtoZ Electronics stock Bosch and Beko appliances in Malta?
Yes. AtoZ Electronics stocks Beko, Bosch, LG, Samsung, Candy, Indesit and Electrolux across the large appliances range. Availability differs by subcategory, so the brand filter on each subcategory page gives the current list.
Does AtoZ Electronics deliver large appliances to Gozo?
Delivery is free across Malta and Gozo on orders over €50, large appliances included. Measure the doorway, the staircase and the lift before ordering anything tall or wide: a narrow staircase stops more deliveries than a front door does. Collection from Attard or Ħal Qormi is the alternative.
What size dishwasher fits a small Maltese kitchen?
A 45 cm slimline dishwasher holds roughly 9 place settings and fits the galley kitchens common in converted flats. The 60 cm width holds about 12 to 14 and suits a family of four. AtoZ Electronics stocks both widths.
